Srinagar, Aug 04 (KNO): Thousands of Shia devotees on Tuesday participated in the Arbaeen (Chehlum) procession in Srinagar, commemorating the 40th day of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. The mourners, including men, women and children, marched along the designated route, reciting Nohas and Marsiyas, beating their chests in mourning and carrying religious flags and banners as a mark of reverence for the martyrs of Karbala. The procession passed off peacefully amid elaborate security and traffic arrangements put in place by the authorities. Several participants spoke to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). They said Arbaeen is not merely a day of mourning but a reaffirmation of the timeless values upheld by Imam Hussain (AS). “Imam Hussain (AS) sacrificed everything to uphold truth, justice and human dignity. His message transcends time, religion and geography, inspiring people to stand against oppression in every era,” said Syed Muntazir, a mourner participating in the procession. Another participant, Abbas Ali, said the gathering reflects the unwavering devotion of the community towards the martyrs of Karbala. “Every year we gather to renew our pledge to the ideals of Karbala. Arbaeen reminds us that faith demands patience, sacrifice and courage in the face of injustice,” he said. Meanwhile, Kifayat Ali, another mourner, said the significance of Arbaeen extends beyond remembrance. “The tragedy of Karbala continues to guide humanity. Imam Hussain’s (AS) stand teaches us compassion, integrity and the courage to uphold what is right, no matter the consequences,” he said. Volunteers had set up Sabeels at various places along the route, distributing drinking water and refreshments among mourners, while religious scholars highlighted the enduring message of Karbala, urging people to uphold the principles of truth, justice, unity and selfless sacrifice—(KNO)
